Working, as I do, in a situation where I spend most of my time on the phone, I've come to realise the many uses and have a deep appreciation for, my phone's volume button.
Previously I've gone through life knowing it existed, but have never really paid much attention to it.
But after days of splitting headaches due to people who insist on talking to me like I'm a comeplete moron (takes one to know one - ha), very SLOWLY and LOUDLY (basically, it's how you'd imagine someone stupid speaking in caps lock) as if speaking this way will in any way influence the information I have previously or am about to give them. As if repeating what they've said a dozen times already, in the same grating voice will make me do anything but inevitably dumb down my language to what I perceive to be their level (nothing above 3 syllables is usually a safe bet) - I've come to rely on it.
It also assists with with those very quiet people.
Or the ones who call from crappy phone lines and claim it's my problem that I can't respond to what they're saying because half of it's been lost in static. Egh. "I'm calling from a nice, cushy government funded phone line. Where are you calling from?"
