nothing new month

http://www.nothingnew.com.au

Salvo's are doing something rather interesting called 'Nothing New Month'. Basically, during October you refrain from buying anything new, besides the necessities like food, toiletries and the like.

Simple: sustainable shopping, saving money and reducing the impact on our environment all at the same time.

Instead of short-term, throwaway attitudes to ‘stuff’, Salvos Stores Buy Nothing New Month extends the life cycle of goods and provides an understanding about the embedded cost and resources that go into the things we buy. It gives you an introduction to the recycled and sustainable alternatives that are better for you, your wallet and the planet.

Sustainable shopping doesn’t have to be hard. Salvos Stores Buy Nothing New Month also shows going green doesn’t have to be expensive, but that by adapting our attitudes, we can start on a money saving path to socially responsible consumption.

Consumption today often involves buying things we don't need, with money we don't have, to impress people we don't like! Salvos Stores Buy Nothing New Month is about spending our time and money more thoughtfully, and understanding the embedded energy costs in the goods we buy.

With this in mind Salvos Stores is laying down the challenge to not buy anything new for a month to show your support for your hip pocket and the environment. And importantly by participating in this challenge you are helping fund the important programs run by The Salvation Army.

This October, think about where stuff comes from, where it is going and what the alternatives are.

Get into Salvos Stores, markets, garage sales, and online second-hand selling sites to experience the joys of a life less wasteful.

I'm TRYING to do this at the moment. As well as clear out a whole bunch of the stuff I currently have but don't need, whether that be by donating it back or selling it on eBay. Methinks I'll be giving it a try. There's a competition aspect to things as well. All the details are available on the site! I'll keep you posted of my progress!
